LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Ronnie and Lou Ann Neal, a couple from Smyer, make sure they carry on a tradition each year at the Panhandle South Plains Fair.

"It's a different Ferris Wheel," Ronnie said, "but it's still in the same place."

They go directly to this ride to remember their first date 50 years ago.

"I actually brung another girl to the fair, and she was a really good friend," Ronnie said.

That lead him to be sandwiched between her and Lou Ann on the Ferris Wheel.

"That is a weird deal, but that's really how it happened," Ronnie said.

During the ride, Lou Ann had him mesmerized.

"We rode that together, and I took her home after the fair," Ronnie said.

They laugh about that.

"That pretty much clenched our life together," Ronnie said.

After three years of dating and 47 years of marriage later, they got back in line for the Ferris Wheel on Monday.

"It's going to feel funny getting on this 50 years later," Ronnie said. "Maybe I won't get sick."

Ronnie still knows why he chose this ride as their first date.

"You can see across the whole town, and be close to a pretty lady," he said. "I think this is the part you kind of remember….you're sitting up here on the top of this with a pretty girl trying to finish it up 50 years ago."

As they rode to the top of the wheel once again, this time, they knew there is no coming down from that high.

"Being together and being honest with each other and staying together, that's just the thing to do," Ronnie said, "and we've done that, and we have no regrets and no problems. Let's see if we can make it 100."

While the Neals have a lot of fun when they go to the fair by themselves, they typically take their four grandchildren now, as their family continues to grow.
