LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Halloween is just a few weeks away and that means children will be flooding streets and neighborhoods collecting candy and goodies all across the South Plains.

A scary reality for many parents of trick-or-treaters is that every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to an emergency room. Also, 1 in 13 children has a food allergy of some sort.

The Teal Pumpkin Project is helping find a solution for kids with allergies.

Brenda Duby, a dietican with Market Street says, "By putting a teal pumpkin on your porch you're letting people know that 'hey I have allergy friendly either candy or other treat items, or maybe non-food items' available for those children."

People will place these odd-colored pumpkins outside of their home to let people know this house has a safe treat option for kids who aren't able to eat every bit of candy.

"This way we can have something for everybody. And again you can still have stuff for children for that don't have allergies and then you can have a separate bucket that has the allergy-friendly food items," says Duby.

Suggestions include pencils, healthy snacks, temporary tattoos and small puzzles.

This initiative takes place in all 50 states and 14 countries.

Starting today you can purchase the teal pumpkins at market street or even paint your own!
