OKLAHOMA CITY – The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team got back on track Friday afternoon in Sooner Athletic Conference play by rolling over Mid-America Christian University, 6-1.

About the only thing that went wrong for Wayland (8-3-2, 4-0-1 SAC) was that its streak of consecutive shutouts ended at four.

"I didn't like that we conceded our first goal (in conference)," Coach Cristhian Ospina said. "We had a lack of concentration and focus."

Even with MACU (2-10, 0-5) scoring a goal, WBU still dominated possession and racked up plenty of goals to make up for the brief letdown.

Five Pioneers – Ezequiel Amestoy, Guillermo Deal, Emmanuel Emmas, Javier Parry and Taval Whittaker – reached the scoreboard. Whittaker scored two goals, one of which came on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.

Wayland outshot the Evangels, 24-6, including 16-1 for shots on goal.

"They came out and took care of business," Ospina said of his team.

On a sour note, the Pioneers goalkeeper Joao Souza was injured near the end of the match and was pulled.

Ospina hopes Souza will be healthy in time for their next match.

"It's one of those things we can't control," Ospina said. "Hopefully, he gets back as soon as possible."

The Pioneers will play the first of its final two regular-season home matches at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Bacone College. The Warriors (5-5, 1-3) face off against St. Gregory's on Saturday afternoon.

Tuesday will also be Senior Day for the Pioneers.

"Every game counts," Ospina said. "We have to keep scoring goals and winning games."
