For the second time this season and third time in program history, Wayland Baptist has provided the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week after strong safety Travis White was recognized for his record-setting efforts in the Pioneers’ 24-14 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Earlier in the day, White repeated as Central States Football League Defensive Player of the Week. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior from Krum broke a school record by intercepting three passes as part of Wayland’s record five-interception performance. Two of White’s picks came in the fourth quarter, including one in the end zone for the second straight week.

White also logged a pass break-up and finished with three total tackles as the Pioneers rallied from a 14-0 halftime deficit against the Lions.

White now has five interceptions in the last two weeks and seven for the season, also a school record. He ranks first in the NAIA in interceptions per game (1.2) and second in total interceptions (7).

White joins teammate Alden Mann as Pioneers who have earned NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week honors. Mann received the honor late last month after logging a school-record 22 tackles against then-No. 25 Webber International (Fla.). Mann matched that total last week against SAGU.

WBU kicker Daniel Martinez also has earned national recognition as NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week last season.

The Pioneers (5-1, 2-0 CSFL), on a four-game win streak, next travel to Tyler to take on Texas College (0-6, 0-3) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Week 3 of Texas Tech's football fall camp is underway and there are still questions on both sides of the football. The air raid attack is to be expected, but Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury likes what he's seen from the Red Raiders backfield so far.
