LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

To initiate Drug-Free Week, Lubbock County VOICES Coalition/Keep Teens Alive Youth Coalition and Starcare Specialty Health System are hosting a Red Ribbon Rally Kick-Off Monday, Oct. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Drug-Free Week, created in remembrance of late DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, takes place Oct. 23 through Oct. 31 annually as a way for people and communities to unite and take a visible stand against drugs.

The Red Ribbon Rally, held on the Lubbock County Courthouse lawn, will be a family-friendly event. The public is encouraged to attend and bring kids to participate in the Trunk-or-Treat event and Reddest Person contest. Multiple vendors will be handing out goodies for kids and educational information for the entire family. Sonic Drive-In will provide hot dogs for the event as well.

"We want to encourage everyone to come out to the event and receive education (about) how to prevent drug use in our community while having some fun," said Teresa Alvarado, Community Coalition Program Director.

"The National Family Partnership reports that 66% of people 12 and older who abuse prescription drugs get them from family of friends. Alcohol also continues to be the number-one drug of choice among youth because it is easily accessible.Education, prevention and access to life-saving measures and medication will curb this epidemic."

More information about the Lubbock County VOICES Coalition can be found on the group's Facebook and Twitter pages as well as at www.starcarelubbock.org/services.

For information regarding the community meeting, call Teresa Alvarado at (806) 241-2902.
