It's called "Operation Keep Cannon," and the city of Clovis hopes the campaign will save Cannon Air Force Base and the $200 million it pumps into the Clovis economy each year.
Cannon Air Force Base is one of nearly 200 military facilities in danger of closing because of a Pentagon effort to save money. Monday, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson hosted a town hall meeting to organize the city's efforts.
"You know, they underestimated the value of Cannon Air Force Base, and they've also underestimated the resolve of the people of Eastern New Mexico," said Clovis Mayor David Lansford.
The city will rally around the base and present evidence of Cannon's significance to the BRAC Committee in hopes of keeping the base active.
