LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team opened the annual Red & Black series on Friday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, as the Red squad posted an 8-5 victory over the Black team.

Junior infielder Michael Davis put together a great day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two walks for the Red (1-0) team, finding his way on base after every at bat. He was responsible for five of Red’s eight runs, driving in three and scoring two of his own. He was a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

The right side of the infield for the Red squad combined for eight hits, as junior Zach Rheams joined Davis for a four hit day that included a RBI and a run scored.

Red opened the scoring in the top of the first, after a sacrifice fly to right field by junior outfielder Tanner Gardner put his team up 1-0. The next batter, freshman infielder Josh Jung, drove in Davis from second for a quick 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Davis shot a double down the left field line to score freshman infielder Grant Little from first to give Red a 3-0 advantage.

Sophomore Ryan Shetter, the Red team starting pitcher, began his day with three scoreless innings; however, a three-run home run by senior Ryan Long in the bottom of the fourth broke up the no-hitter to even the score at three. Shetter would go five innings, striking out four, while allowing only two hits.

The Red squad would answer in the top of the fifth as Rheams ripped a leadoff double down the right field line to start the inning. Two batters later, sophomore catcher Matt Bernstein followed suit with another double to right, plating Rheams. Later in the frame, Davis would work a walk with the bases loaded to put Red up, 5-3.

Black (0-1) rallied back to even the game with runs in bottom of the fifth & sixth innings, thanks to runs scored by sophomore Tyler Fowler and senior Hunter Hargrove, the latter coming off a single to left field from Little. Hargrove would finish the day with two runs scored.

Davis led off the top of the eighth with a triple down the right field line and was driven in by a Rheams single to right-center field to give Red its third lead of the afternoon. Davis would add two more insurance runs in the ninth with a right field single to complete his stellar performance at the plate.

Freshman pitcher Caleb Freeman recorded the win after three innings, allowing only one run on two hits, while striking out two. Another freshman, Josh Jung, who had a hit and a RBI at the plate, came on to pitch in the ninth to record the save and close out the 8-5 win for the Red team.

Game two of the Red & Black series is schedule for a 2 p.m. start on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
