LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

November is Epilepsy Awareness month.

Did you know there are 17 new seizure medications on the market today to treat a wide range of symptoms from a full body seizure to a blank stare?

Dr. K.J. Oommen, a neurologist at Covenant, says even that blank stare deserves attention.

He says, "The blank stares goes from not diagnosed to misdiagnosed, especially in children who are thought to be misbehaving in class or not answering the teacher. But even the very first episode is sufficient reason to go see a doctor."

Although medical students learn that epilepsy strikes one in 100, Dr. Omen says some experts think that number is growing to as much as 1 in 26 as our population ages, since the incidence of seizures increases over age 65.
