There's a new city manager in town and I am glad to congratulate Jarrett Atkinson on getting the job.
This is an exciting time for Lubbock: new businesses moving to town, downtown redevelopment and completion of the final phase of the Marsha Sharp Freeway.
Lubbock is growing and we need a city manager who is transparent, responsive and visible.
City manager is a tough job, and Jarrett Atkinson will face serious issues immediately.
Downtown redevelopment is great, but there remain questions of who will pay for infrastructure and electrical improvements.
Lubbock citizens expect relief from stormwater fees and a better system of assessing and billing those fees.
And most of all, Lubbockites want to see city hall tighten its belt just like the rest of us have.
With city healthcare costs spiraling out of control it's time for someone to look at city employees and say "no" just like other employers have had to do across this city.
Consider this...we welcome Jarrett Atkinson and make this promise: We'll be watching to hold you accountable to the taxpayers and to celebrate your successes.
You have a great city to lead...and that's exactly what we expect you to do.
