Lubbock County Commissioners may come under budget in the building of a new jail.
In 2003, commissioners issued $83 million in bonds for the new jail. Monday, they awarded a bid to W.G. Yates & Sons Construction for nearly $68 million.
Monday's bid will not be the final cost of course but right now estimates are less than originally planned on. Groundbreaking is set for August in this empty field, three miles southeast of the airport.
