LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

UPDATE: Comet Cleaners is extending the deadline as they issue an urgent call for toy donations. You can drop toys off at any Comet Cleaners location. They're open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday and they're even open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 24.

Every year, the Christmas is For Kids campaign gives people a chance to help Lubbock kids in the care of Children's Protective Services.

This is the 29th year for this toy drive, which helps children involved with Children's Protective Services receive gifts on Christmas morning.

We spoke with one local family about how this toy drive helped them.

Leigh-Ann Johnson says her two kids are her world, 18-year-old Jason, and 7-year-old Jaime.

"I'll do anything for my children," Johnson said.

Jason and Jaime are both children with disabilities, but Leigh-Ann says that has never held them back from doing what they love.

"He is autistic, ADHD. He loves his Yugio cards. He is like any normal child except for the autism," Johnson said about Jason.

"She has oppositional defiant disorder and ADHD. She's my bubbly loves animals baby girl," Johnson said about Jaime.

Being their mother has been so rewarding, but Leigh-Ann says it can come with some challenges, challenges her CPS caseworker has helped her work through.

"They have helped me get better knowledge of my son's autism," she said.

Leigh-Ann says she is also thankful for what CPS does for her family during the holidays, through Christmas is For Kids.

"They get to have a Christmas and that they get to have the surprise and joy of waking up in the morning and having the Christmas," Johnson said.

Regional Director for CPS, Shawn Vandygriff, says this is her 24th year to be involved with the campaign.

She says seeing happiness in children like Leigh-Ann's is what it's all about.

"These families, they don't have any other way to provide Christmas," Vandygriff said. "The people in this community provide those gifts for us to be able to give on Christmas."

She says thanks to the giving hearts of our community, 800 children received gifts following last year's toy drive.

"I wish they could see the smiles on these kids' faces that they give to them by giving these gifts because it's priceless," Vandygriff said.

Those smiles are exactly what makes Leigh-Ann happy, knowing her children will receive a Christmas gift they otherwise wouldn't be able to have.

"It brings a ray of sunshine to kids that might not have a Christmas," Johnson said.

"I think every child deserves to be safe, every child deserves to be taken care of, and every child deserves to have Christmas," Vandygriff said.

If you want to donate to Christmas is For Kids, you can drop off an unwrapped toy for ages birth to 18 in the boxes at any of the Comet Cleaners locations in town.

The drive runs until Dec. 21.

Comet will give you a free laundry coupon for your donation.

Store hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
