LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

You've heard an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

A newsletter from Tufts University says that may be stretching it a bit, but there's no doubt that apples are a rich source of a type of antioxidant that has proven beneficial against asthma, lung cancer, macular degeneration and any problems related to blood sugar.

So which is better, yellow or red? Any apple is a healthy choice because apples contain no sodium, no fat and no cholesterol. A medium-sized apple is only about 80 calories.

But when it comes to nutrition, Brenda Duby, a registered dietitian at Market Street, says there is a difference.

She explains, "You always want to pick the apples with the most color. This is the same variety. These are sweet tango apples," she says while holding up a yellow and a red apple. "This one (the red apple) has grown closer to the top of the tree so it has developed more color, more nutrition. Nothing wrong with this one (the yellow apple). You're just going to get more nutrition out of the darker colored apples."

Brenda has more tips on selecting and saving produce so that it will last longer.
