Communities mourning death of Littlefield woman, allegedly murdered by her husband

LITTLEFIELD, TX (KCBD) -

The communities of Amherst and Littlefield are in mourning tonight, following the murder of a Littlefield woman.

Pearland police believe Ernestina Chairez was killed by her husband, Rodolfo Chairez, on Tuesday evening, after he drove more than eight hours from Littlefield to Pearland, a suburb of Houston.

Authorities say the couple was separated, and that Rodolfo made the drive hoping for a reconciliation.

For Amherst resident, Clinton Sawyer, Ernistina Chairez was more than just a friendly face he saw daily in her role as assistant postmaster in Amherst.

"Very pleasant lady, very accommodating in her work, did her job well, just one of those people who...just enjoyable to be around," Sawyer says. He says the news of her death caught him off-guard.

"Shock I think would be the main thing. Very surprised, never something I would have expected," Sawyer says.

Investigators say Rodolfo drove to the apartment where Ernestina was staying, and the two spoke for several hours.

Authorities say Rodolfo shot his wife three times in the chest, with three children, all under the age of 13, watching.

As of Thursday night, Rodolfo remains in jail in Brazoria County, on a $250,000 bond, charged with murder.

Sawyer says Ernestina's kids are first on his mind during this heartbreaking time.

"Your mom was a good lady, you should be proud of her, for who she was and what she stood for."

The Lamb County Sheriff's Department tells us they were contacted about a month ago by the bank Ernestina worked for, concerned about her safety. Officials say her co-workers were worried about what Rodolfo would do.
