Funeral arrangements set for Lubbock community leader Eric Strong

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Funeral arrangements have been set for Lubbock community leader Eric Strong.

A viewing will be held Friday afternoon, March 17, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Griffin Mortuary.

A wake will then follow from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church.

Strong's funeral will be Saturday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at St. John United Methodist Church.

Strong was a graduate of Dunbar High School. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University, before going on to Texas Tech, where he earned his master's degree.

Strong went on to work for Texas Tech for more than 20 years.

He was named Man of the Year twice, once by the Confederated Women's Clubs of West Texas and a second time by the area chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

He was awarded Texas Man of Distinction by the National Business League of Texas and Top Techsan by Texas Tech University.

Strong was Director of the Lubbock Roots Historical Society.

His most recent project was the design and development of the Historic East Lubbock Gateway, dedicated to educating people all over the world about the influence of African-American culture in West Texas.

Strong was 64 years old.
