The results are in....Africanized bees have made their way to the South Plains this year.
A Lynn County farmer was stung by bees in early June. Scientists have tested those bees and it turns out they were Africanized bees. Fortunately, the man wasn't injured seriously but you are urged to take precaution against all bees.
First, bee proof your home:
- Fill in any potential nesting sites like tree cavities and holes in outside walls.
- Put screens on top of rain spouts and water meter boxes.
- Remove piles of trash and junk.
If you come across a bee hive or colony, don't disturb it...call an expert to get rid of the hive. If attacked by bees you should run away and seek shelter. Do not swat at the bees, that will only aggravate them.
