LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 75 percent of public school teachers are female. Here at home, three Lubbock-Cooper Elementary schools enable students to get more interaction with male mentors even while they're at school.

A program called the Watch DOGS program gives dads a chance to sign up to volunteer at their school. DOGS stands for Dads of Great Students. These men who participate volunteer to spend the day at their child's campus, carving out their own time and modeling for their children how they're willing to invest in their education. These men monitor the activity in the hallways, help out in the cafeteria and act like a teacher's aide, tutoring some students.

Rhett Dawson has two students at Lubbock-Cooper West Elementary, this is his second year volunteering with Watch DOGS and he says he enjoys seeing his kids in their school routine and getting to know the teachers that are investing in his children. He says the male students seem to respond well to the program, giving High-Fives as they pass in the hallway. "I think it is positive for the kids to see maybe a type of role model or mentor waking around helping out."

Dawson encourages the fathers who can volunteer one day of their time to do it, "I think its good for kids to see fathers who do care and get involved with the schooling of these kids... they may not have that at their home."

According to the director of public information for Lubbock-Cooper ISD, More than 300 dads volunteer throughout the district at three of their four elementary campuses. The dads have the opportunity to sign up for one day at the start of each school year.
