Vandals target Lubbock Co. Democratic Party headquarters

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A vandal targeted the Lubbock County Democratic Party headquarters overnight. The numbers "14 88" were spray painted on their building.

The numbers are typically associated with white supremacy and Neo-Nazism. 

Vandals also spray painted "support your pres" on the outside of the building.

Party Chair Stuart Williams said they have dealt with people tearing down and vandalizing candidates' signs, but this is the first time someone has targeted their headquarters.

"This is racism, this is ugly, it's disgusting, it's hateful and I'm not going to tolerate it," Williams said. 

"I think this is certainly a hate crime. To bring up Hitler, Neo-Nazi, white supremacy and racism, whoever did it, even if it was a joke, this is serious," Williams said. 

Williams is the son of a white mother and a black father, and he is wondering if these messages are personal.

"I'm concerned as the first black chair of the Lubbock County Democratic Party. I am concerned as an American," Williams said. 

He reported the vandalism to the state party.

Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa sent us this statement:

"Racism, sexism, bigotry and hatred will not make America great. The Neo-Nazi attacks in the middle of the night on the Lubbock County Democratic Party are horrific, disgusting, and cannot be tolerated. Texas is a big state, there is no room for bigotry. There is no excuse; this is an affront to the values we hold dear as Texans. This is not how Americans resolve their difference. Spray pain and threats will never stop us for fighting for what is right. Democrats will continue to stand against hate and divisions regardless of where it rears its ugly head. We hope those responsible will be brought to justice."

The Texas Democratic Party is asking for people to pitch in to help pay for the damages caused to Lubbock's headquarters.

"I am from Lubbock, this is not the Lubbock I grew up in. We've always had our differences, democrats and republicans, but it's never come down to this," Williams said. 

Williams said he hopes both parties can work together to put an end to these hateful crimes. 

We reached out to Lubbock County Republican Party Chair Steve Evans who sent us this statement:

"The Lubbock County Republican Party is saddened by the recent vandalism of the County Democrat Party Headquarters. This comes at a time when the country needs unity. We hope the police department is able to bring the aggressors to justice."
