AUBURN, AL (WBRC) -

Butch Thompson didn’t know what he wanted to do with baseball, he just knew he had to be around the game.

He is and the game has been good to the man who once played collegiately at Birmingham Southern College. Thompson is now in his second season as head coach at Auburn and what a time he is having.

“This is a dream opportunity and a dream come true,” said Thompson. “I’m so happy to be helping young men learn and not just about the game, but about life.”

Thompson has the Tigers near the top of the SEC standings this season at 8-4 and 24-10 overall. His career began at BSC as a player and moved to head coach at Jeff State in Birmingham before returning to his alma mater as an assistant coach under Brian Shoop, whom Thompson calls his mentor.
