New device approved by the FDA for cluster headaches

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

People who suffer from cluster headaches could soon get relief from a handheld nerve stimulator. It's called GammaCore and it was approved today by the FDA.

It is the first non-invasive way to stimulate the vagus nerve.

The handheld device transmits a mild electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve which runs all the way from the brain to the colon.

In studies, the treatment helped about a fourth of the cluster headache patients who tried it, but with about 400 thousand suffering from that debilitating disorder, that means it could help about a hundred thousand patients.

Patients would just hold it to their skin and use it whenever they need it.

The GammaCore should be available later this year.
