State lawmakers now have 23 days to find a way to finance public schools.
Day 7 of the special session Tuesday involved a house debate on school funding. Right now, all versions of the plan will cut property taxes and increase sales tax. Each plan includes a franchise tax option for businesses, and all plans would place a tax on cigarettes.
The major differences come with the house and the governor's plans. The house's school finance plan would also tax bottled water, auto repairs and cosmetic surgery. Governor Perry wants to increase Homestead exemptions and give teachers a $1,500 pay raise.
The House, Senate and Governor Rick Perry must compromise on a plan by July 21st.
