Plainview Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Murder of Mijoy Sierra

Under tight security Friday, Christopher Lee Salinas of Plainview admitted to shooting his common law wife. The confession was part of Salinas' plea agreement. His sentence will begin immediately with credit for time already served. Salinas shot and killed Mijoy Sierra at their Plainview home during a domestic dispute in August of 2003.

With Friday's confession, Mijoy Sierra's family members relived the horror of the day she died. They talk with NewsChannel 11 about a dear family member who they say just had a way about her. Mijoy's Cousin, Monica Sierra-Heredia says, "I remember when we were kids, she taught me how to put sugar on my toast." and then she laughs. It's the little things Mijoy's family holds on to now that she's gone. Monica says she was beautiful. She had long black flowy hair. She always had a smile and this laugh... that's one thing I remember is her smile." Teri Sierra-Alvarado, Mijoy's Aunt recalls, "Mijoy had a sweet spirit. We talk about her every day. We miss her tremendously." And her aunt Patricia Sierra says, "I can hear her voice now; how she sounded. She had a high pitched voice. She was something else."

Mijoy's family remembers her smile, but an emotional letter read at the end of the trial paints an entire different picture of the last year of her life. Before her death, Mijoy wrote a letter to her mom. In it, she says she was free and happy before meeting Chris Salinas. In one passage, Mijoy wrote: "When I remember all the time we have spent together, I noticed that I'm always sad, depressed, and hurt. I've cried almost every day for the past year and I can't remember when is the last time I laughed."

Patricia says, "We never knew she was going through what she was going through." Monica adds, "I think a lot of people were blind sided by it. I know i was." Now, the entire Sierra family wears wristbands that say "Speak Out Against Domestic Violence." Mijoy's cousin, Desiree Nolan says, "This could have been prevented and stopped a long time ago."

Christopher Salinas's mother spoke to NewsChannel 11 very briefly. She said it was a sad day and a tragedy for both families.

Chris and Mijoy had three young children together who are now with Mijoy's mother.
