The millions of women who take birth control pills should know that a possible side effect can be a lower libido. And now, new research is finding that reduced sex drive may not return to normal when they stop taking the pill.
Boston University researchers looked at three groups of women: those who were on the pill, women who stopped taking the pill, and women who never used the pill. They found the pill users had a protein in their blood stream that influences sexual desire.
"When you stop taking the birth control pill , you continue to make this protein at a level higher if you were never exposed to the birth control pill, said Dr. Irwin Goldstein, researcher.
Dr. Goldstein says if you are taking birth control pills and think that you may be experiencing sexual dysfunction, you should talk with your doctor and you may want to try some other birth control.
