Cruz blames staffer for porn video 'like' on Twitter account

(RNN) - Sen. Ted Cruz, R-TX, blamed a staffer using Cruz's official Twitter account who liked a two-minute long pornographic video, thus temporarily featuring it on his account for a couple of hours early Tuesday morning, Politico reported.

Cruz said Tuesday the staffer made a mistake.

"There are a number of people on the team who have access on the account. It appears that someone inadvertently hit the like button. When we discovered the post, which was, I guess, an hour or two later, we pulled it down," Cruz told reporters. "It was a staffing issue. And it was inadvertent, it was a mistake. It was not a deliberate act. We're dealing with it internally, but it was a mistake. It was not malicious."

It is unclear what will happen to the staffer responsible.

Catherine Frazier, the senator's senior communications advisor, tweeted earlier that the offending material had been removed from his account and reported to Twitter.

Because of the errant like, Ted Cruz was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter overnight.

It's not the conservative senator's first recent political encounter with porn.

Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign had to pull a commercial after it was revealed softcore porn actress Amy Lindsay appeared in the spot, CNN reported.
