Changes Ahead for Texas Tech Tailgaters

Texas Tech senior Aaron Blom wonders where he will tailgate this coming football season. “We used to be right over here, in front of Hastings since 2001,” said Aaron.

Parking Director Buddy Knox says Tech moved all the free tailgating spaces to the west commuter lot. “Right here in front of the United Spirit Arena are 500 spaces. It’s on our West Commuter Lot,” said Knox.

Not only will tailgating be farther away from the stadium, but fans will have to contain their tailgating camps between the lines. “Because we are so short on parking due to construction, we're going to ask that people be a bit more orderly,” he said.

Knox says Citibus will shuttle fans free to and from the lot. “We know this is not handy, I don't intend this to be a permanent tailgating solution. We would like to find somewhere close and more convenient, but during construction we have to put them somewhere and this is the best that we could come up with for this year,” said Knox.

“I think it's a fairly good alternative. But probably too far from the stadium,” said Aaron.

There will be new rules this year.

  • You will not be able to reserve a spot until Friday after 5:30 p.m.
  • You will not be able to drop off cookers to reserve spots and there will be limitations on how many spaces you can take. However, there will be port-o-potties and trash cans for people to use.
