Monday morning Lubbock City Council will discuss budget problems that have kept 27 police recruits out of the academy.
Right now city officials say there is not enough money to hire all recruits. Back in January, city council vowed to hire as many officers the police department could find. But last week 27 recruits were turned away. Officials say not all recruits can become officers because the city can only afford to hire 20. Those who were dropped had just received a letter of congratulations. Police Chief Claude Jones says the letter never guaranteed employment.
City council members say they can hire 20 officers now and 20 more in January. This would allow them to lower taxes. Councilman Floyd Price has vowed to fight for the police recruits. He will present his solutions at the meeting. NewsChannel 11 will be at the meeting and will continue to bring you the latest.
