Italian grandmother learns how to use Google Home Mini

(RNN) – Technology can be a lot of fun, even when it’s not quite working right.

Ben Actis posted a YouTube video this week of his 85-year-old grandmother, Maria Actis, who's learning how to use her new Google Home Mini. He's a Facebook engineer. His girlfriend works at Google.

The smart speaker responds to voice commands. It can do things like search the internet, fetch music or give you the forecast. You ask. It tells.

With a thick Italian accent, it can be a bit of a challenge.

“Hey, Goo Goo. What is weather today?” grandma says, tapping the top of the mini.

Nothing.

A family member coaxes grandma to try again.

“It’s a woman,” she asks. “I’m glad to meet you.”

Through their laughter, the family gives her advice on how it works.

“Hello, Goo Goo. Okay, Goo Goo.”

Eventually she gets the forecast. Grandma puts her hand to her chest.

“I’m scared. It’s a mystery. Oh my gosh,” she says.

Next, she asks Google for some music.

“Play a song for me,” is grandma’s command, before singing into the speaker.

She never gets the song, but it was great family entertainment.

Technology’s a wonderful thing, isn’t it?
