Hundreds of West Texans are heading to prison, by choice. Almost half of Texas prisoners go back behind bars with in three years of being released; Operation Starting Line is trying to change that statistic. Volunteer training was held at Oakwood Baptist Church Saturday. The volunteers bring their faith-based program go into prisons, and also provide mentoring and support during the years after. Men, women, and youth gain education, spiritual, and life skills need to successfully re-enter society.
"Operation Starting Line provides material and an opportunity for the inmates to make positive moral choices so they won't come back to prison units," Patricia Herman said.
Operations Starting Line will be in 29 prison throughout West Texas October 7th-16th. Volunteers hope to reach 33,000 prisoners during that time.
