Making A Career Change to Teaching

Some of these people sacrificed high-paying jobs to make that change, but they tell us "teaching children is priceless."

Just like his students, it's Steven Randolph's first day at school. Coach Randolph teaches sixth grade social studies and athletics at Alderson Middle School. "I got into teaching because I wanted to make a difference," he said.

Coach Randolph was an army medic for four years. He later worked at Covenant and the Lubbock Heart Hospital. "After years of being in health care, it was time to move on," said Randolph.

Moving on is what Tye King did, after working as sports-caster at NewsChannel 11. "I loved being in TV, I loved being a sportscaster at Channel 11. It was rewarding in itself, but to see a kid take the knowledge you have given them and do something with that knowledge is the biggest reward in life," said King.

This is King's second year at Frenship High School. "I teach what you would call "intro to video technology."

Meanwhile, coach Randolph is finding the classroom a battle field of the minds. "Raise your hands if you have a question," he said. "I've had a lot of fun already and it's just half of the first day of class."

Mr. King will continue to be amazed at the power of teaching.

Lubbock-Cooper Superintendent, Pat Henderson, told us he was in the oil business and Navy before becoming a teacher and finally superintendent.
