SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Republican Rep. Steve Pearce and New Mexico's top election official have reached an agreement on access to campaign cash that Pearce raised while in Congress and sought to use in his run for governor.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports under the proposed agreement filed last week, the state would allow people elected to federal office to use old donations to run for state office if those contributions are not larger than what is allowed under New Mexico law.
Pearce had filed a lawsuit after Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver had instructed him that only $11,000 of the more than $900,000 in campaign cash could be transferred because of a state law that limits campaign contributions to $5,500 in a primary election and again in the general election.
