LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Two years after the tragic murder of Holli Jeffcoat, a family member is introducing legislation to prevent sexual assault.
Stets Bryant, a cousin of Jeffcoat, hosted a community meeting this evening to host an open forum on sexual assault awareness as well as inform others of his bill. The Jeffcoat Sexual Assault Justice and Prevention Act (or Holli's Bill) aims to harshen penalties on those convicted of sexual assault, especially against those with mental disabilities.
The bill is also intended to prevent any possible future sexual assault cases through a variety of avenues such as providing funds to organizations aiming to prevent sexual assault and require bystander intervention sessions at school, college, and job orientations.
Drew Landry, a Democratic candidate for the Texas House of Representatives District 83, was in attendance. Landry said he believes this could grow into something bigger.
"Holli's Bill is a very good start. This is part of the lawmaking process," Landry said. "This is part of the agenda-setting that when people have ideas they let either elected officials or candidates know about these things. He's getting the ball rolling on this and I commend him for that."
