Saints shut out No. 12 Pioneers twice

SAN ANTONIO – Wayland Baptist hadn't been shut out all season, but Our Lady of the Lake did it twice here Monday as the 12th-ranked Pioneers dropped the first two games of a non-conference series, 3-0 in the opener then 7-0 in the nightcap.

The teams will meet for the final game at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Missions Baseball Academy.

In the first game, neither team scored until the Saints (11-16) broke through for all three of their runs with two out in the fifth inning.

Starter Bradden Kennard pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits while striking out three and walking three. Chris Lacher went the final 1 1/3, giving up a run on three hits and one walk with one strikeout.

The Pioneers (16-7) reached OLLU starter Caleb Mireles for just three hits, by Austin Moya, Gregg Veneklasen and Nick Rucker.

In game two, Wayland managed one more hit than in the first game but still couldn't produce a run. Brendon Foust provided two of the Pioneers' hits while Yaniel Vargas and Jacob Adams got the others.

OLLU put up three runs in the third and four more in the sixth. All but one came off starter Brayden Price, who in five innings gave up five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Tristen Hefner finished up, allowing a hit and two walks with one K

WBU returns to SAC play against Southwestern Christian in games at 4 and 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder Field.
