RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A dramatic, comeback win over Purdue capped a doubleheader sweep for Texas Tech softball on Saturday. The Red Raiders (19-10) topped Idaho State 5-1 before rallying for a 4-3 win over Purdue on Day Two at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, Calif.
Trailing Purdue 2-0 with two on and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Breanna Russell hit an inside-the-park home run to put Tech in front 3-2, and junior Kiana Workman delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
With a pair of victories Saturday, the Red Raiders improved to 3-1 at the Highlander Invitational and 7-3 overall on its spring break trip to the Golden State. Tech concludes its stay in California and wraps up non-conference play on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT against UC Riverside.
Freshman pitcher Erin Edmoundson (12-4) went the distance against Purdue, after sophomore Kassidy Scott (5-3) tossed a complete game against Idaho State. Edmoundson finished with two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Scott gave up just five hits and the one earned run with four strikeouts and a walk.
Workman had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-6 on the day with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. The Tomball, Texas, native has hit safely in 7-of-10 games during the trip, including all four games in Riverside.
Redshirt sophomore Karli Hamilton also provided a punch offensively, finishing 4-for-6 with a double, two RBI, two runs and a pair of stolen bases on the day. The Houston native has posted multi-hit games in all four tilts this weekend and driven in seven runs during that span.
Purdue (6-21) pushed across two runs in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead into the sixth before Russell struck with her second career home run. The Boilermakers sent the game to the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a hit batter with the bases loaded and two outs.
The Red Raiders walked it off in the bottom of the frame as redshirt freshman Michaela Cochran drew a walk and scored one batter later when Workman blasted a double to the wall in right center.
Powered by Workman and Hamilton, the middle of the lineup did the majority of the damage for Texas Tech against Idaho State (2-16), going a collective 6-for-9 with three doubles. Along with multi-hit games from Hamilton and Workman, Hartwell went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.
Tech opened the scoring in the fourth after Hartwell singled, stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball to center. Hamilton followed with a two-out single to make it 1-0.
After Idaho State tied it in the top of the fifth, Tech regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single through by redshirt freshman Heaven Burton.
The Red Raiders tallied three insurance runs in the sixth as Hartwell, Workman and Hamilton blasted three consecutive doubles to make it a 4-1 ballgame. Russell added another on an RBI ground out to make it a 5-1 game going to the seventh.
The Red Raiders will conclude play in California with UC Riverside (21-8) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT. Tech will then gear up for its Big 12 slate, which begins at No. 5 Oklahoma next weekend.
