DALLAS, TX (KCBD) -
In front of a huge Red Raider crowd in Dallas, the 3rd seeded Red Raiders knocked off 6th seeded Florida to advance to the Sweet 16 with a 69-66 victory.
Keenan Evans threw an alley-oop jam to Zhaire Smith with 29 seconds left to lift Texas Tech to the Sweet 16.
The Red Raiders started out much better than they did Thursday.
Keenan Evans didn’t have a basket in the first half Thursday, but the Senior hit 2 big 3’s early on.
Florida led Texas Tech 33-32 at the half.
The Red Raiders opened the 2nd half on an 8-2 run to take a 5 point lead.
Florida responded scoring 8 straight points to go up 3.
Tech went on a 14-4 run, which included a big slam from Zhaire Smith. I thought the backboard might shatter to honor Darvin Ham, who did that 22 years ago to the day as then 3rd seeded Texas Tech eliminated 6th seeded North Carolina 92-73 also in the 2nd Round of the NCAA March 17, 1996.
That run gave the Red Raiders their biggest lead of the game 58-50.
Former Florida Gator Brandone Francis made a layup on his former team to give the Red Raiders a 62-57 lead.
With the game tied at 64, Keenan Evans hit a 3 with 2:31 left to give Tech the lead for good. Tech ended up taking the game 69-66.
The 26-9 Red Raiders advance to play Purdue in Boston on Friday.
