Loose cattle cause multiple wrecks along I-27 in Plainview

PLAINVIEW, TX (KCBD) -

I-27 southbound in Plainview was down to one lane overnight after two separate accidents involving cows that got out onto the freeway. The accidents happened around 11:30 Wednesday night between mile markers 48 and 49.

Hale County Sheriff's deputies say a herd of cattle were loose on the highway. Three of the cows were hit and killed by oncoming drivers.

The first accident happened just south of the Southwest 3rd Street overpass.In that wreck two animals were killed after being hit by a minivan. The minivan suffered extensive front end damage, but the driver was treated and released at the scene.

The second crash happened a few hundred yards south when the third cow was hit by a black SUV. The driver of the SUV did not require medical attention. The remaining cows were corralled to the Central Plains Veterinary Clinic nearby.

DPS Troopers, Plainview Police and Fire all responded along with Hale County deputies. The road was expected to fully reopen early Thursday morning.
