The U.S. Department of Energy says the station itself usually doesn't make much off a gallon of gas, usually no more than a couple of cents.

Let's take a look at where your money goes per gallon of gas:

  • More than 40% goes to crude oil suppliers.
  • Another 31% goes for taxes.
  • 13% goes to refining costs.
  • The final 13 % is used for distribution and marketing.
