It will be up to local school districts to decide how to spend 65% of their budgets on class room instruction.
Governor Rick Perry met with educators from Region 17 in Lubbock Tuesday. The governor issued the budget requirement immediately after lawmakers failed to pass a school finance system. He says making sure 65% of funds go to the classroom, will create $1.6 billion new dollars for class room teaching.
"What this action means is that there will be more financial accountability for the taxpayers and more efficiency in how the money is being spent," said Gov. Perry.
Executive order requires schools to report how they're spending tax-payer dollars. Schools suspected of wasting money will be subject to special accreditation investigations.
