LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - This month is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and authorities say an average of three children a day become victims of child abuse and neglect.

The month-long activities kicked off today with the Go Blue Lubbock event and ribbon cutting.

Mayor Dan Pope says it still surprises him how large the problem is.

"We can statically show the progress being made. But I think I'm always surprised when I realize in the last decade, 17 children in Lubbock County have lost their lives to abuse or neglect... We're better than that," said Mayor Pope.

The next event will be this Friday and Saturday for the Child Abuse Summit & Educational Symposium at 21st and Louisville.

The two-day Child Abuse Conference and Educational Symposium on Friday, April 6, 2018, and Saturday, April 7, 2018. The Conference is presented by Covenant Health, South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention & South Plains Association of Governments (SPAG).
