LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

A welcome back event will be hosted at 5 p.m. Sunday at the John Walker Soccer Complex located at 3901 10th St. to celebrate the Texas Tech Pom Squads two first place wins during a national competition last week during the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championships.

The Pom Squad, which is part of the Tech Spirit Program, took the national title in Dance Jazz Division 1A for the second consecutive time, as they were also champions last year. However, the squad entered into the pom category for the first time and won in Pom Division 1A.

This was a major victory for the squad as team members bested those from Brigham Young University, a dance team traditionally known for victories in that category, according to a Tech news release.

Last week, Tech's cheer team also competed last week in Daytona Beach, Florida, taking third place in the Co-Ed Cheer category, finishing behind Oklahoma State University and first place University of Louisville.

“We weren't happy with just winning one thing. We wanted to continue to elevate our program to be one of the top in the country," Erin Alvarado, pom squad coach, said in the release. "It also speaks to the type of students we are getting at Texas Tech. They are relentless and so dedicated to do anything, to put their best foot forward and to win. They deserved it today.”
