Hurricane Children

As hurricane conditions worsen, experts say mental health is nearly as important as survival and physical health, especially for the children. As refugees plant themselves in new surroundings, even some already in West Texas, UNICEF offers this suggestion.

"You have to make the effort right now to get them in as normal conditions as possible and to be around other children who experience the same thing, to be a part of community, to be part of a school environment, whatever that takes," says Lisa Szardowski.

Lisa says children who have fled the devastation of Katrina should be spared from watching TV, a reminder of all the traumatic images they left behind.
