Lubbock To House 1,000 Evacuees

At least 1,000 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina will be calling Lubbock home.

The city has agreed to take in at least 1,000 people per a request by Governor Rick Perry. Reese Technology Center can house 90 people immediately at a dorm because there are bathroom and shower facilities in place. The city is also making plans to also use an air-conditioned 47,500 square foot hanger, dining facilities and gymnasium at Reese.

Mayor Marc McDougal has authorized $500,000 from the general fund to cover these costs. The federal government should reimburse those funds.
