Lubbock area medical and emergency workers were called out to the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport Saturday afternoon, but the expect 500 Hurricane Katrina evacuees never showed up. Dozens of ambulances and buses were ready for the transport the hundreds of survivors. But at the last minute the flights into Lubbock were called off, for unknown reasons. The Red Cross told NewsChannel 11 that Lubbock will receive refugees with medical needs, but it is not known how many. Lubbock hospitals are prepared to treat the victims. The Emergency Operating Center downtown has also been activated to help with the medical needs. Shelter has been set up at the Reese Center, along with at temporary pharmacy. The hurricane evacuees are expected Sunday. They will be taken to facilities around the South Plains for background checks. They will then be bussed to the Reese Center.
