LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Mindy Brashears, professor of food safety and director of Texas Tech's International Center for Food Industry Excellence, has been selected by President Donald Trump as the undersecretary for Food Safety with the United States Department of Agriculture.

This announcement was made via a news release on Friday after Sonny Purdue, secretary of agriculture, applauded Trump's selection of Brashears.

Brashears' research is mainly focused on improving food safety standards in relation to public health, according to the release. Her work evaluates interventions in pre-and-post harvest environments and the emergence of antimicrobial drug resistance in animal feeding systems.

She has also led international research teams in Mexico and both Central and South America.

More information on Brashears' research focuses can be found here.
