Abernathy sending 14 to State Track & Field meet

ABERNATHY, TX (KCBD) -

Abernathy is reaping the rewards of a strong track season as they are sending what they believe is a school record 14 athletes to the State Track and Field meet in Austin this weekend. They have seven girls and seven boys going.

Girls Track Coach Justin Barton says that large number says a lot about the athletes in the program.

"This is the first time in 15 years I've ever been part of this to have that many kids going to the State Track meet. It just says something about our kids. The hard work they put in and the desire to be the best."

Boys Track Coach Michael Clarkson says the community is super excited to have a large number of athletes heading to State.

"To have 7 competing boys and 7 competing girls at the State track meet is a big deal here. it's exciting and gets our younger kids exciting. We feel like we have a chance to go down there and compete."
