LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Scammers have recently targeted Lubbock homeowners, sending letters pretending to offer a homestead tax exemption that is not legitimate.
The letter claims to be from Homestead Designation Services. The title, Lubbock Designation of Homestead Request Form, leads homeowners to believe this is for a homestead exemption application. It asks for a name, address, signature, and a $45 check or money order.
Tim Radloff with the Lubbock Central Appraisal District says, "It's a scam... I know some people see that and it appears to be legal or it appears to be official. It's not."
The letter's mailing address is in Austin, which Radloff says is another sign that it's not what it appears to be.
"All exemptions that are applied for in Lubbock County come through us. So whether you're in Slaton, if you're in Idalou, Ransom Canyon... all exemptions go through the appraisal district."
At the bottom of the form is a paragraph which specifies what people are actually applying for.
It reads: The designation of homestead under TEXAS PROPERTY CODE is distinct from the homestead tax exemption. The paragraph also states "This mailer is an advertisement for services. This document is not an official State of Texas form."
Radloff advises homeowners to be wary of letters asking for a payment, when the LCAD will do it for free.
