LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Tommy Bonner and his team are making last-minute preparations to the Bier Haus, which will open its doors to the public on Friday, May 11.
The Bier Haus is located off of Broadway in the old Gardski's Loft location.
KCBD interviewed Bonner in January, after he told us he bought the restaurant that had been a Lubbock staple since 1976.
After decades of service, Gardski's closed its doors in 2015.
Bonner wanted to bring life back to the building by making it a casual dining restaurant with a large patio.
Bonner owns a retail nursery in Marion, and said his background in landscaping helped when designing the space.
"Everything is handmade," Bonner said.
The exterior of the patio at Bier Haus is lined with gardens, growing a variety of vegetables like peppers and tomatoes.
The large fenced in, dog-friendly patio has water bowls attached to tables to keep your four-legged friends hydrated on hot summer days.
Bonner used cypress trees to create the bar top, bar stools, and tables.
The unique lighting structures are also handmade.
Customers can also enjoy a drink while sitting on swings that hang from the patio's pergola.
Bonner had a sign made to remind customers this is not Gardski's. It hangs above the entrance.
While he wants people to know this is a different business, he did not do away with some of the Gardski's history.
The grand staircase and stained glass windows are still there and you can find Gardski's popular Monte Cristo sandwich on the Bier Haus' menu.
Bonner's restaurant offers a variety of food including hamburgers, tacos, and fried chicken.
Customers can find full bars on the patio and in the upstairs dining area.
"My vision for the Bier Haus is to have a good blending for all ages; I don't want a strictly college bar, that's not my goal," Bonner said.
On Friday, May 11th, Bonner will open the restaurant to all military (active and retired), first responders, and veterans at 6:30 p.m.
Just show your ID or badge and receive half off your meal.
"We want to serve those people first because they are the reason that we can do what we do, and walk around and be free. All too often those guys these days aren't getting enough credit. They deserve all the credit they can get. They will take a bullet for you and I and that is braver than I am," Bonner said.
The restaurant will open to the public at 9 p.m. on Friday.
The Bier Haus will be open Sundays through Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
The Bier Haus is located at 2009 Broadway Street.
