SUDAN, TX (KCBD) -

The Sudan ISD school board approved Florence OC Keith Virdell to be the new Head Football Coach and Athletic Director on Monday night.

He's excited to be coaching the Hornets.

"I'd like to thank Mr. Harrell, Mr. Martin and the School Board for giving me the opportunity to come out here. My wife and two little boys were pretty pumped up about coming out here and being part of the Sudan family."

Virdell has also coached at Midland Lee, but this is his first head coaching job.

"I'm pretty familiar with West Texas. We are going to hit the ground running. We are not going to come in and wait till next year to get going. I'm really excited about meeting the kids. It's really important to build those relationships. The longer I'm in this business the more I feel I can use the game of football and athletics to help these students become success young men and women.

Virdell takes over for Guthry Edwards, who left after nine years in Sudan, the last four as the Hornets Head Coach, to pursue ministry training and teaching in the Lubbock area.
