Uber driver caught in the crosshairs of Depot District shooting

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Police received a shots fired call to the 1800 block of Buddy Holly Avenue around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Two groups of people were fighting in the 900 block of 18th street, which then spilled over onto Buddy Holly Avenue.

The shots fired were at a black SUV. That vehicle belongs to Jake Collinson, who was there responding to a trip request.

"My guys got into the car and I was trying to kick them out because I told them I didn't want to be their getaway driver."

Collinson told KCBD, after he argued with the passengers, someone from the other group started firing at the vehicle.

"I drove off to get out of the way of the fire. We got around the corner and the guy in the back seat said 'I'm hit, like I'm shot.' So I pulled over and he got out and that's when I saw the wound in his back and the hole in my back seat. I immediately drove him over to UMC and he got taken care of and I think he's gonna be okay."

"It's your worst nightmare as an Uber driver but this is what happens when society sets the standard for conflict resolution at the pull of the trigger."

Although we can't provide specifics yet, there are business owners in the Depot District who are tired of these incidents and are prepared to offer a cash reward for any information leading to the arrest of this shooting suspect.
