PLAINVIEW, TX (KCBD) - Longtime high school basketball coach Carl Irlbeck will be inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame Saturday in San Antonio.
He's excited for the day to come.
"It's very exciting. I've had chill bumps since the first time they told me. I've had a great career. This is the cherry on top of the cake."
In his coaching career, The General has won 1,065 basketball games and nine State Championships in four different sports.
At Abernathy, Coach Irlbeck won a boys State Basketball Title in 1980. He also coached Abernathy athletes to three tennis State Titles and two Cross Country State Titles. In 1994, he led the Plainview boys to the State Basketball Championship. In the late '90s he won girls basketball and volleyball State Titles at Plainview Christian.
So what was the secret to his success?
"If you work long and hard enough success will come."
Coach Irlbeck is 80 years old now, but don't count the General out from coaching again!
"It's possible. I'll be 81 in July. I still feel I can do things. I'm still in good health. I feel great. I just don't know about the endurance it would take to coach that many kids again."
