BlueCross BlueShield of Texas to scrutinize emergency room visits for billing

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Beginning Monday, customers insured by BlueCross BlueShield Texas may have to pay the whole bill for an emergency room visit, depending on what the reason is or where one goes.

There will no longer be any benefit for out-of-network emergency room use unless an issue is serious or life-threatening, according to a news release from the company. This has been implemented as a way for the company to make sure customers are going to the ER for emergency care that is covered by the company and medically necessary.

The new plan is also a way to make sure people are not just going to ERs because it may be more convenient than going to a doctor or urgent care center.

The company is now encouraging people to visit facilities that are within its network, according to the release. For those looking for an appropriate facility to visit are asked to go to the company's website.

However, all life-threatening health issues should be taken seriously and calling 911 or visiting the nearest ER is always an option for customers.
