County Holds Public Hearings on Tax Increase Proposals

County property and hospital taxes may be going up. The first public hearing on the increases was held Monday. County commissioners are proposing a half cent property tax increase from .255 to .26. Commissioners need the money for employee raises and to mandated electronic voting machines.

The hospital district is requesting commissioners raise the tax rate 7.9 percent. For someone owning a $100,000 home that would be 68-cents more per month. UMC blames the increase on the rising cost of indigent care and state budget cuts.

Two more public hearings will be held on the increases. The first being September 15 at 10:00 a.m. The second will be September 26 at 10:00 a.m. The final vote will be September 26.
